Techno293 & Techno293 Plus World Championships
An internationally renowned venue for windsurfing, Torbole looks all set to provide the ideal conditions for top class racing, as well as an astonishing backdrop in the shape of the picturesque Trentino scenery. The action, too, should match if not better those surroundings with the field being made up of more than 500 young windsurfers from over 30 different countries around the world.
The exciting and talented young competitors will be battling it out in the under-15 and under-17 Techno293 classes and in the Techno293 Plus class for those aged over 17. Globally recognised as the feeder classes for all international windsurfing competition, Techno293 is considered to be part of the approved ‘Olympic Pathway’ for young sailors and Techno293 Plus has been picked this year for the Youth Olympic Games sailing programme.
It should come as no surprise, then, that the World Championships in Torbole are expected to play host to all of windsurfing’s best and brightest, who will surely be aiming to pick up gold on Lake Garda and improve their potential future Olympic chances.
Amongst the favourites for the Techno293 under-15 girls category have to be French pairing Elisa Jariel and Mathilde Garandeau who both excelled in the European championships in Poland just a few months ago. Similarly, Italian competitor Giorgia Speciale will likely fancy her chances of taking the under-17 crown, having not only won the European Championships this summer but also being one of the most decorated sailors in the history of the class.
On the male side, too, a star studded fleet will hit the water in Italy and home favourite Edoardo Tanas may prove tough to beat in the under-15 category. The young Italian triumphed in the European Championships in Poland this year and will surely be further buoyed by home support. At under-17 level, meanwhile, Israeli Itai Kafri is the sailor with the momentum of a European Championships win this summer behind him.
Whether those favourites prevail or new champions emerge from the pack, however, what is assured is that these World Championships will deliver a full eight days of high octane and high quality windsurfing action.
